“Give us each day our daily bread.”-St. Luke 11: 3
“It will not be enough to have eaten yesterday unless we eat similarly today. May our daily poverty encourage us to pour out this prayer at all times, for there is no day on which it is unnecessary for us to eat this (spiritual) bread to strengthen the heart of the person within us.”–St. John Cassian
In the Bible, bread is both physical and spiritual which the Lord gives to those who cry out in hunger and thirst. The Greek adjective, translated as “daily’ in the Lord’s Prayer means both physical and spiritual bread. Jesus is the Bread of Life (St. John 6). We need every Word of God to feed our souls (Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4) which by themselves bottom feed on the dregs of the world. We can fast from physical bread, but never the Word of God, the Bread of Life. The Law of God shows us where we hunger that we may be fed and watered by God’s almighty Hand. The two breads, physical and spiritual overlap in the heights and depths of our lives in Christ in His Body, the Church: The Holy Communion. Take and eat. Take and drink. And if you do not think you need the Lord’s Bread, His Word, then put your hand to your breast and know you are flesh and blood (Luther, The Large Catechism, The Lord’s Prayer). “Sir, give us bread always.” (St. John 6: 34)
This is a good reminder! I found that if I miss reading the Word, then there is something missing. There is the news and daily events, which are depressing, and they add up. Without the daily food, the Word of God, there isn’t, a release or peace.
