Genesis 32: 27-28 And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” 28 Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

For what it’s worth: It just struck me like a thunderbolt that Israel is only nation on earth given it’s name from the very mouth of God. ישראל: “Israel” means like El, God, Isra, wrestles or struggles: He who wrestles or struggles with God. In an age, when once again we see worldwide a rise in anti-Semitism, we would do well to remember Who named Israel. Not that the present day nation of Israel is without sin, but no means! Just as the new Israel, the Church is beset by sin as well. Yet, when we read and remember the Holy Scriptures, and the sad and violent history of anti-Semitism, we must remember the Lord who chose His ancient people. IN the millennia since King David brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem, the Lord set His heart upon Jacob and now Israel. We read about the Hittites, the Jebusites, etc. but have you ever met a Hittite? No, but you may know and are friends with Jews. His people persist because the LORD persists. Romans 9: They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.”
