We are 11 days into the New Year as of this posting and many with New Year’s resolutions have failed…or maybe just a little bit?  But it’s still failure.  “Just a little failing”?  It’s like the old saying, “you can’t be a little bit pregnant .”

“Resolutions” and “resolve” can swing both ways, good or evil.  I can resolve to be good or I can also have resolve to do evil.  Some of a person’s resolve will be for the good externally but it can not cure the darkness we were internally (See Ephesians 5: 8). The news, as history, is really the “olds” of many people with great resolve doing the latter.  In fact, the latter is a whole lot easier for us sinners to do, in fact that path is wide and easy…that leads to destruction (St. Matthew 7: 13 )

“Resolution” is unlike repentance.  Repentance is God getting His Way with us while resolution is us getting our way.  Repentance is always a good, God’s good in our lives.  It means a “change of mind”, a 180 degree turn, a change of life. The Lord sends His Word of Law and says the way ahead is a dead end, the bridges to eternal life you think you can build are washed out, you are lost (see Romans 3: 9-26).  He sends His Son and in effect says, You have been found out, you can not hide. (see Genesis 3: 8-13) I have found you, I seek you. (see St. Luke 15)   The wipe out up ahead is wiped out and all flesh sees My salvation. (Luke 3: 6)  IN the waters of My Baptism by John, I put the old serpent under My feet ( see Genesis 3:  15 and see mosaic above).  It is not your resolve that saves but My resolve. (Titus 3: 4-6) Repentance is the God-given realization that the Lord alone saves and has and will. Repentance is a not a once in a lifetime event, but a daily event, as Luther wrote in the first of his 95 Theses:

When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, “Repent” (Mt 4:17),he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.
